How to Convert M4A to MP3 Free (iPhone Voice Memos, No Upload, 2026)

M4A is the default format for iPhone voice memos, WhatsApp voice notes, and many iOS audio recordings. MP3 is what everything else expects. Here is how to convert M4A to MP3 free — without uploading your audio to anyone's server.

What is M4A and why does it need converting?

M4A is an audio file container developed by Apple. It stores AAC-compressed audio inside an MPEG-4 container — the same technology used for Apple Music and iTunes purchases. iPhones record voice memos as M4A by default, and WhatsApp delivers voice messages as M4A on iOS.

The problem: M4A is not universally supported. It works perfectly on Apple devices, but:

  • Many podcast hosting platforms (Buzzsprout, Podbean, Spreaker) require MP3
  • Transcription services and speech-to-text APIs prefer WAV or MP3
  • M4A attachments sometimes do not play on Android devices or in Windows Media Player
  • Some DAWs and audio editors do not import M4A natively
  • Voice memo recordings sent by email may not play for recipients on non-Apple devices

How to convert M4A to MP3 free (no upload)

Step 1: Open the free audio converter

Go to the free M4A to MP3 converter. No account required. The converter runs entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API — your M4A file is never sent to any server.

Step 2: Upload your M4A file

Drag your M4A file onto the upload zone, or click to browse. The file loads locally in your browser. This works for:

  • iPhone voice memos exported from the Voice Memos app
  • WhatsApp audio messages saved from iOS
  • Screen recordings exported as M4A from QuickTime
  • Any other M4A file from an Apple device

Step 3: Select MP3 as the output format

Choose MP3 from the output format selector. For most purposes, 192 kbps is the right bitrate — significantly smaller than the M4A source with no perceptible quality difference for voice recordings or music at normal listening levels.

If you are uploading to a transcription API (Whisper, Google STT, AssemblyAI) select WAV instead — uncompressed audio gives the highest transcription accuracy, especially for soft speech or background noise.

Step 4: Download the MP3

Click Convert and then Download. The MP3 file saves to your device — ready to upload to your podcast host, share via email, or import into a video editor.

Why no-upload matters for voice memos

Voice memos often contain sensitive content: meeting notes, interview recordings, personal reminders, confidential calls. Most online audio converters — Convertio, CloudConvert, Online Audio Converter — upload your file to their servers before converting. Your audio is processed on their infrastructure, stored temporarily (sometimes for hours), and subject to their privacy policies.

This converter processes the M4A entirely in your browser. The Web Audio API decodes and re-encodes the audio using your device's CPU — the file never leaves your computer or phone. There is no upload, no server log, no retention period.

M4A vs MP3 — quality comparison

M4A (AAC)MP3
CompressionLossy (AAC codec)Lossy (MP3 codec)
Quality at same bitrateSlightly better than MP3Very good at 192+ kbps
File sizeSimilar to MP3Similar to M4A
CompatibilityExcellent on Apple; variable elsewhereUniversal — plays everywhere
Podcast platform supportOften not acceptedUniversally accepted
Browser playbackChrome/Edge yes; Firefox variableAll modern browsers

Converting M4A to MP3 involves re-encoding between two lossy formats, which means a small additional quality loss. At 192 kbps output this is imperceptible for voice recordings and minimal for music. If quality preservation is critical, convert to WAV (lossless) instead of MP3.

Other common audio conversions

The same converter handles all of these without uploading your file:

  • FLAC to MP3 — lossless archive to portable format. Keep the FLAC master; convert a copy for sharing.
  • WAV to MP3 — studio export to shareable format. A 3-minute WAV at ~30 MB becomes a 4 MB MP3 at 192 kbps.
  • OGG to MP3 — web/game audio to universal format.
  • MP3 to WAV — convert back to uncompressed for DAW editing (note: this does not recover the quality lost in the original MP3 encoding).

Use the free audio converter for all of these. If your audio is inside a video file (MP4, MOV, WebM) and you want to extract it, use the video-to-audio tool instead.
